For a period of time in the late 1980s, Cape Breton’s Chickie Macphee became one of his island’s most famous and most beloved residents. His notoriety didn’t begin with any great feat, show of skill, or significant act of generosity. Chickie Macphee was just a regular Cape Bretoner with a bit of a drinking problem and a love for Karaoke.

In this episode Chickie Macphee's brother Rich MacPhee will tell us how Chickie ended up famous for getting drunk and singing ‘Wild Thing’ on the community TV channel.

For a few weeks in October, even your grandmothers favorite drug store is selling Skull shaped coffee mugs and blood splattered napkins. What's not to love about that?

A Walk Amongst the Dead in Halifax

I've always found Cemeteries a calming and peaceful place but not everyone is comfortable roaming their twisted paths and especially so under moonlight. If that describes you, you may find this episode a bit uncomfortable at first as roaming around a graveyard is exactly what we are going to do. But, don’t be scared off just yet, I suspect this walk amongst the dead may change the way you view the boneyard.

I've called upon Craig Ferguson, a local man who spends a considerable time amongst the dead, to take the lead. He produces a unique project that merges art, journalism, and story Telling called Dead in Halifax. His work starts with a headstone catching his eye and leads to a fact finding mission into the life and dead of the person buried in the ground below. It's like a modern history lesson for goths.

In this episode of Nighttime, I'll be meeting with Craig Ferguson at the gates of the Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax and together we are going to go for a walk amongst the Dead in Halifax.

the Story of Glen Race

For a period of weeks, in May of 2007, it appeared a serial killer may have been targeting Halifax Nova Scotia’s gay community. When a suspect was identified and arrested at the Mexican - USA border, it turned out to be something all together different. To put it plainly, Glen Race thought he was destroying vampires.

To help me talk through the story, and to join in the discussion surrounding the many elements to this case, I've invited my good friend and fellow podcaster Kristi Lee (Canadian True Crime) to join me.

The 1978 Clarenville UFO Sighting

When Clarenville RCMP Constable Jim Blackwood responded to a report of an unusual object in the sky, he expected it to be the next in a series of recent reports that all resulted in nothing more than a confused citizen describing a vague light.

When he arrived to the scene he found a group of mystified witnesses viewing the still clearly visible object with binoculars. He knew then that this report was unique.

The incredible events which unfolded during the roughly two hour long sighting would fuel both an international media whirlwind and a localized UFO craze.

In this episode, the amazing details of the 1978 Clarenville, Newfoundland UFO sighting will be told by the now retired Cst. Jim Blackwood.

the Decline of Tim Hortons (with Corey Mintz)

Once upon a time, I loved Tim Horton's. I drank their coffee and I ate their fresh baked goods, but those days are gone. The love affair is long over. To put it bluntly, I think they suck now. What puzzles me, is that it wasn't always this way and that's why I'm left with burning questions...

When did they lose their way, why did they lose their way, and will they ever get back the magic they used to have?

It wasn't until I happened upon a piece of investigative journalism in a MacLean's magazine that the full picture of this betrayal became apparent. The piece was titled "How Tim Hortons lost it's way" and as I read it the veil of marketing that had obscured the slow decline of Tim Horton’s was forcefully pulled away and Canada's dirty secret was exposed.

Some of the points raised in that article will be discussed and expanded upon in this episode as in this episode, I'm joined by author and journalist Corey Mintz.

Our topic is the DECLINE of Tim Hortons.

The Story of 'the Coffee Cowboy' Robert Chetwynd

In this episode, we are going to come face to face with one of most prosecuted people in Nova Scotia's storied history.

Our guest is a criminal so hardened that when I asked him for an estimate on the length of his rap sheet, he simply drew a blank and giggled. But, that's probably for the better as listing the charges this man has faced would be about as interesting, and as exhausting, as reading through the Canadian Criminal Code.

But, as you will soon learn, there is much more to it.

when the layers of legalese are peeled back this isn't the story of a career criminal. It's the story of a man who simply wanted to hang around at tim horton's parking lot drinking coffee with his friends.

The problems started when he lost his license and bought of horse as a way to get around town. If this man on horseback was a can of gasoline... the match that ignited it would be his dispute with the management of his small town Tim Horton.

After several instances of his horse answering the call of nature on their property.... He was told that he, nor his chestnut quarter horse were no longer welcome on their property... a demand he refused to obey. Now, nearly 20 years after the events that made him and his horse international news, He is willing to tell his story.

UNICOLE and UNICULT - 1 - What is UNICULT? who is UNICOLE?

In short, UNICOLE is an influential online spiritual teacher who leads a group called UNICULT.

The longer version however, is way more out there.

The genesis of this episode was an email I received from a listener of Nighttime letting me know that they, and several of their friends in Toronto, had recently joined a fast growing online spiritual group based in California named UNICULT. In the email they explained that the cult was led by a part human/part alien pop singer named UNICOLE.

My response was something between what the f*&K? and this is why I love the internet!

This kind of thing absolutely does it for me. Aliens, psychics, cults, and the dark corners of the internet... I couldn't resist learning more about UNICOLE, UNICOLE’s many followers, and their cult.

Rather than just telling you what I've learned from the many articles and the seemingly endless videos about UNICULT and UNICOLE, I went right to the interstellar source.

the Strange World of Ashley MacIsaac

In this episode, we are going to be joined by one of the more colourful characters to ever grace Canada's music charts.

Our guest is as well known for his awe-inspiring talents on the fiddle as he is for the strange stories and controversy scattered throughout his 30 year career.

If you followed Canadian music in the 90s, you know Ashley Macisaac.

His 1995 album 'Hi how are you today' went double platinum and in the process helped bring about a sort of renaissance for the fiddle and Celtic music.

This episode however won't be about Ashley Macissac's impact on popular music and it won't be about his various public relations missteps that shocked and appalled many of his more traditional fans.

Ashley MacIsaac is joining me here on Nighttime to speak publicly for the first time about something very personal and very important to him.

UFOs are, and have been, a part of his life since childhood.

David Hamel's Granite Saucer (with Dr. Matthew Hayes)

According to him, the story starts in the 1970s when two extraterrestrials entered his home through his television set and took him aboard their spacecraft. While on board, he claims to have been taught engineering concepts unknown to mankind.

When her whereabouts were unaccounted for, suspicions were directed towards both of these me as well as her current boyfriend.

The story that will unfold will be remembered as one of Newfoundland’s darkest crimes.

What’s up with the Pentagon and UFOs? (with MJ Banias)

This story starts several years ago when a series of videos were leaked from Defense industry insiders. What made the footage so interesting is that it was filmed using highly advanced weapon systems from American fighter jets and it appeared to show some kind of aerial objects displaying flight capabilities far beyond what is known to exist.

Given the unofficial leaking of the footage, the video's origins were always accompanied with doubt, speculation, and rumor… But things are different now.

The United states department of defense has recently authenticated, declassified, and officially released these videos and they did so while fully disclosing that they are unable to explain the aerial objects being tracked by their fighter jets.

Tonight, on this episode of Nighttime, we are going to be joined by writer and investigative journalist MJ Banias for a discussion surrounding the Pentagon and UFOs.

Taylor Mitchell's Tragic End

Taylor Mitchell was a singer and songwriter from Toronto. After the encouraging reviews of her debut album ‘For Your Consideration’ Taylor was seen as an up and coming star.

In October of 2009, Taylor embarked on a tour of Eastern Canada to promote her album. Tragically, the tour and Taylor’s life would be cut short as a result of a horrific event on a popular hiking trail on Cape Breton Island, NS.

In this episode of Nighttime, our story is the life and tragic death of Taylor Mitchell.
