My favorite songs about ALIENS. (inspired by Episode 25)
/As someone with a love for good music and the unexplained, you would think my passions would rarely intersect. Fortunately for me, many of my favorite artists have similar interests. To demonstrate this, I've collected some of my favorite songs featuring ALIENS!
8. Parliament - Mothership Connection (1975)
With a funk band as wild as Parliament releasing a UFO themed album during the height of their career, the result could only be a compelling listen.
Are you hip to Easter Island?
The Bermuda Triangle?
Well, all right
Ain't nothing but a party
Starchild here, citizens of the universe
I bring forth to you
The good time on the mothership
Are you hip? Sing, fellas!
7. Sufjan Stevens - Concerning the UFO Sighting near Highland, Illinois
When Sufjan Stevens set out to create a concept album profiling the history of Illinois, he was so moved by a 2000 UFO sighting he opened the album with this song.
When the revenant came down
We couldn't imagine what it was
In the spirit of three stars
The alien thing that took its form
Then to Lebanon, oh God
The flashing at night, the sirens grow and grow
Oh history involved itself
Mysterious shade that took its form
6. The Killers - Spaceman (2008)
I know opinions differ on The Killers, but I feel they are criminally underrated. Spaceman from their album Day and Age is a stand out tune, on a stand out album AND IT'S ABOUT AN ABDUCTION.
It started with a low light
Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed
And then they took my blood type
It left a strange impression in my head
You know that I was hoping
That I could leave this star-crossed world behind
But when they cut me open
I guess that changed my mind
5. Dr Octagon - Earth People (1996)
If you're unfamiliar with abstract hip hop artist Kool Keith, you have lots to catch up on. Each album is from the point of view of a bizarre character he creates. On his first album, Dr Octagonecologyst, he plays the role of Dr. Octagon an extraterrestrial time traveling gynecologist/surgeon originally from Jupiter.
React with four bombs and six fire missiles
Armed with seven rounds of space doo-doo pistols
You may not believe, livin' on the Earth planet
My skin is green and silver, warhead lookin' mean
Astronauts get played, tough like the ukelele
As I move in rockets, overriding, levels
Nothing's aware, same data, same system
4. Blondie - Rapture (1980)
a little disco, a little funk, a bit of rap and all awesome. Although this song really only has one section related to our topic, I couldn't resist adding it.
you get in your car and you drive real far
And you drive all night and then you see a light
And it comes right down and lands on the ground
And out comes a man from Mars
And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head
3. David Bowie - Starman (1972)
On his album 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' David Bowie plays the character Ziggy Stardust, the human manifestation of an alien being who arrives to earth five years prior to it's end to present humanity with a message of peace and love. If you don't know this album, get it now... they don't make them like this anymore.
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
2. Porno for Pyros - Pets (1993)
Upon the breakup of the critically acclaimed band (and a favorite of mine) Jane's Addiction, three of it's four members regrouped as Porno for Pyros and released an album that blew some minds.
Children are innocent
Teenager's fucked up in the head
Adults are even more fucked up
And elderlies are like children
Will there be another race
To come along and take over for us?
Maybe Martians could do
Better than we've done
We'll make great pets
1. Rheostatics - Aliens, Christmas 1988 (1991)
The Rheostatics are a beloved Canadian band that is almost unknown across the border. When I speak to people about great Canadian music, they are one of the bands I recommend.
They came down 1988:
Thousand spacecraft like petals on the earth,
And they had big eyes,
And they watched like spies
Till they found someone who no one would believe.
There you were in your underwear,
All alone drawing comics for your church.
And we took you up, and we put you under:
Placed you on a table for observation.
