the Story of Codey Hennigar

Wyses Corner, Nova Scotia, 2015

The story we are going to hear involves a raging house fire, 3 deaths, a dramatic police take down, and successful use of the controversial NCR or not criminally responsible legal defense

The unfortunate stars in this tragedy are the Hennigars, who have felt cornered by Canada's treatment of its mentally ill long before members of their family began to die.

In this episode. We are joined by Chandler Hennigar and our topic, is his brother, Codey Hennigar.

The Murder of Taylor Samson - Part 4 - Sandeson Gets a Retrial

cover art.jpg

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Saturday, Aug 15, 2015

Taylor Samson, a local university student, tells his girlfriend he has to run out for a moment and that he wouldn’t be long. When she see’s him exiting the apartment carrying a large duffel bag, she assumes it contains marijuana.

When he fails to return home that night.. or ever again, she, and many others in Taylor’s life, begin to suspect he was the victim in a drug deal gone very wrong.

What will start as a missing persons investigation will become one of Nova Scotia’s highest profile murder trials. One that sees two students of Halifax’s Dalhousie University at center stage.

The Victim, Taylor Samson and the accused William Sandeson who at the time of Taylor’s murder was only days away from beginning classes at the prominent medical school.

In part four of this series I’ll again be joined by Kayla Hounsell (author of First Degree: From Med-school to Murder) and our topic will be the surprising legal updates that have made this story far from over.

The Murder of Taylor Samson - Part 3 - My Brother Taylor

Cover art episode three.jpg

When one hears a story like that of Taylor's murder it's hard to not digest the twists, turns, and surprise the way you would a work of fiction.

In part one and two, Kayla and I made a point to discuss the character of Taylor Samson, and the role he played in the lives of many who stand heartbroken on the sidelines of this case. But, two people removed from the story can only take that so far.

For part three, I wanted to place a cap stone on this series, something that brings the events surrounding Taylor's death into the right context... that being the senseless murder of a human being loved by many as a son, a friend, a student, an entrepreneur, and much more.

To help tell us about what it means to lose Taylor, I've invited one of the people who know him best. Someone who looked to Taylor as both a role model, a sometimes nuisance, an eternal protector, and a best friend...

Taylor's younger brother Connor Samson.

What Happened to Cortney Lake - Part 2 - Missing and Murdered

24 year old Cortney Lake was last seen the evening of June 7, 2017 in the area of her Mount Pearl, NL home. At the time of her disappearance, Cortney’s life was in a state somewhere between transition and turmoil. An ex boyfriend had just been released from prison for a series of crimes against her, whereas another ex, the father of her young son, was pressuring her to rekindle the romantic relationship the pair ended years prior.

When her whereabouts were unaccounted for, suspicions were directed towards both of these me as well as her current boyfriend.

The story that will unfold will be remembered as one of Newfoundland’s darkest crimes.

In this episode of Nighttime, I will be using excerpts from a long form interview with Cortney’s mom Lisa Lake. Our topic is the disappearance and murder of Cortney Lake

the Big Ben's Murder

On March 22, 1992, Sydney Nova Scotia was expecting it’s worst snowstorm of the year. With over 30 centimeters expected to fall Doug Dupe encouraged his wife Marie to not take any chances by going in to work. With it being her first back shift at the convenience store where she had only recently been hired, she decided to brave the elements.

The shift, and the night, would be her last.

the Murder of Amber Tuccaro

20 year old Amber Tuccaro, was last seen alive on August 18,2010. She had left her infant son in the care of her friend and planned to hitchhike into the nearby city of Edmonton for the night.

The only clue in Amber’s disappearance is the recording of a telephone call she received while riding in a vehicle with an unknown male just moments after she was last seen. In the chilling recording, Amber seems to slowly realize the man is not taking her towards Edmonton but instead onto a series dirt roads… just like the ones her remains would be found on two years later.

the Downfall of Patrik Mathews

Our story centers around two Canadians who met on the front lines of the race war militant white supremacists hope to start.

On one side, we have a journalist with the Winnipeg Free press named Ryan Thorpe and on the other side, we have Patrik Mathews, a Manitoban who moonlights as a recruiter for a secretive neo-nazi hate group.

I say “moonlit” as when not conspiring to overthrow the government and create a white ethnostate, He was known as Master Corporal Patrick Mathews… a combat engineer in the Canadian Military.

At least, he was before Ryan Thorpe's investigative journalism outed him.

Buckle up for this one.

In this episode of Nighttime we are joined by Ryan Thorpe, the Winnipeg based journalist who infiltrated a paramilitary white supremacy group known as the Base.

Our story is the exposure and the downfall of Major Corporal Patrik Mathews

The Toronto Van Attack - 2 - the Confession of Alek Minassian

cover.jpg

Although Canada is no stranger to murder, madness and mayhem, we have been very fortunate to have largely avoided the type of mass murders and shootings that have become common fixtures in other countries with similar cultures to our own.

On April 23, 2018, Younge Street in Downtown Toronto was the setting of an event that many Canadians had taken comfort in thinking could never happen here.

25 year old Alek Minassian hit the gas and jerked the wheel of the rented cube van he was driving forcing the vehicle onto a busy sidewalk. For several city blocks Minassian used the vehicle to target pedestrians, killing 10 and injuring 16.

In this episode of Nighttime, I am again joined by my best friend Scott to continue our discussion of the Toronto Van Attack we started in part one of this series. Our focus now will shift from speculating on his motivation, to reviewing excerpts of his confession.

The Toronto Van Attack

This episode was originally released April 2018

Although Canada is no stranger to murder, madness and mayhem, we have been very fortunate to have largely avoided the type of mass murders and shootings that have become common fixtures in other countries with similar values and cultures to our own.

Sadly, just days prior to recording this episode Younge Street in Downtown Toronto was the setting of an event that many Canadians take comfort in thinking could never happen here.

In this episode, I'll be joined by my best friend Scott to discuss the April 2018 Toronto Van Attack. Our discussion includes the event, the arrest, what is known of the man driving the van, his rumored ideological motivation, and sadly... we will discuss the innocent people killed during this horrible event.

The Disappearance of Kimberly McAndrew

The students who descend on Halifax each year come from far and wide, but despite the depth of their diversity, there is at least one thing they all have in common.

It's a dark brooding thing that dwells in the pits of their parent’s stomachs.

Luckily, it's easily ignored with the simple thought "that stuff doesn't happen in Halifax" or "my kid is too smart for that".

But, as a tragic few have learned, ignoring it is about as effective as covering your eyes to avoid an oncoming train.

Nightmares do come true, and they often happen to good people.

One such nightmare is the 1989 disappearance of then 19 year old Kimberly McAndrew who was last seen exiting the Canadian Tire store she worked at.

During this episode we will learn about Kim's disappearance, two possibly related crimes against young women, and three equally disturbing suspects.

Allan Legere - the Monster of Miramichi

Like many of horror literature's greatest villains, by day this monster hid in the forest that surrounded the village and only at night, under the cover of darkness, would it enter civilization to exercise it's wickedness. But, unlike horror’s many boogeymen and women what made this monster so terrifying is that he isn’t a work of fiction...

This is the story of Allan Legere. an infamous Canadian serial killer who, after a daring prison escape, stalked his community, murdering several elderly citizens while hiding in the dense forest surrounding the region.

To begin our series, we are joined by Rick Maclean (Editor of Miramichi leader, Author of Terror) who provides his account of the many twists and turns that unfold during this terrifying story.

In this follow up episode we heard directly from Allan Legere, in his own words taken directly from a Christmas card he sent me.

The Dark Side of Jury Duty (with Mark Farrant)

A very small number of Nighttime listeners have served on a jury, but many more know someone who has. Regardless which side you fall on, chances are the trial involved was fairly mundane and unremarkable... but that’s not always how it happens.

Think of someone you know, perhaps a painfully innocent aunt.

What happens when they get assigned to a case involving some of darkest evidence imaginable? how do they get through it? how do they cope? and who picks up the pieces after the verdict is delivered?

Very few are better positioned to answer those questions then our guest Mark Farrant.

In 2014, a letter arrived at Mark’s door indicating he was in a pool to serve on the jury for an upcoming murder trial, and to put it simply, he hasn't been the same man since.

The trial was that of Farshad Badakshan, a man accused in the horrifically brutal killing of his girlfriend.

The graphic details Mark was immersed in had left him with the crippling symptoms of PTSD and to make matters worse, laws that serve to provide jurors privacy have made it nearly impossible for mark to get treatment.

This has been the fuel for one of Canada's fiercest advocates for the rights of Canadian jurors.

In this episode, Mark will share both his experiences with the dark side of Jury duty and his efforts to make things better for future jurors.

The Story of Holly Bartlett

Halifax, Nova Scotia, 2010

In life Holly Bartlett was a conqueror.

Born with a condition that would lead to complete vision loss, Holly refused to allow her blindness to prevent her from living life to it's fullest.

She had an active social life, a career, an education, and a network of friends and family that looked to her as an inspiration.

But, all the good things that were happening in Holly's life came to a screeching halt on a cold night in March of 2010.

After spending a night out with friends, celebrating her upcoming graduation, Holly was found gravely injured in a nearly inaccessible area underneath a downtown Halifax bridge.

the police investigation into the circumstance that would lead to her injuries, and in turn her death, was surprisingly fast.

The Police believed the death was accidental, however... it seems they are about the only ones that feel that way.

Holly's friends, family, and supporters have been very vocal about their dissatisfaction with the police investigation of Holly's death. An investigation many call at best, flawed and at worst, derailed by an ignorance about living with blindness.

In this episode we will be joined by Maggie Rahr (host of What Happened to Holly Bartlett) for a discussion about a case that will make you scratch your head, and make you scream.

The Murder of Daniel Levesque

Aug 2011, Victoria, BC

When 20 year old Daniel Levesque moved from small town Revelstoke, BC to the comparatively big city of Victoria, it was to pursue his dream of finding a career as a performing musician.

Tragically, only weeks after he arrived, Daniel and the dreams that brought him there would be snuffed out by the manager of the convenience store Daniel had taken a job at.

That manager, Josh Bredo, befriended Daniel and weaved an intricate web of lies that played off Daniel's kindness, generosity, and his trusting nature.

In this two part series, Kristi Lee of Canadian True Crime and Jordan of Nighttime will collaborate on the telling of this story that should make anyone with a respect for justice scream.

In part one, Kristi provides a narrative account of the twists and turns in this heartbreaking story.

In Part two, Jordan will take part in an in depth discussion with Daniel's mom, the inspiring Stacey Thur.
